Arantxa Sanchez Vicario was a determined player who would scamper around the court getting every ball back that she could. She arrived on the scene in 1989 as a 17 year old and beat Steffi Graf in a tough French Open final (Graf's only Grand Slam defeat in 1988 and 1989). Sanchez Vicario was always at her best on clay. She was runner up at the French in 1991 (beating Graf easily before losing to Seles). She won her second French Open in 1994 beating compatriot Conchita Martinez in the semis and home favourite Mary Pierce in the final. In 1995 she was runner up to Graf. The 1996 final was an epic but once again Sanchez Vicario was denied by Graf 10-8 in the third set. In 1998 Sanchez Vicario overcame Monica Seles in the final to take her third French crown. Sanchez Vicario also won the US Open in 1994 with a brilliant performance against Graf. However, it was often Graf that denied her further titles. She was runner up to Graf in the 1994 Australian and lost to Pierce in the 1995 final. She was runner up at Wimbledon in 1995 and 1996 to Graf. She beat Graf in the 1992 US Open but lost the final to Seles. By the time the new millenium dawned, Sanchez Vicario was in the twilight of her career. But despite many near misses, Sanchez Vicario still won four Grand Slam titles and was one of the finest clay court players of modern times.
