Russian baseliner Maria Sharapova arrived on the scene at Wimbledon in 2004 when she beat former champions Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams to win the title at the age of just 17. It was as if the ultra competitive Sharapova suddenly turned into a giggly schoolgirl after winning the title, showing an innocent exuberance that won over the Wimbledon crowd. At the 2005 Australian she lost a tight semi final to Serena Williams. She lost her Wimbledon crown in the semis to Venus Williams. At the 2006 US Open Sharapova beat Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin to take her second Grand Slam title. At the Australian in 2007 she beat Clijsters before losing to Serena in the final. At the Australian in 2008 Sharapova beat Henin in the quarters, Jelena Jankovic in the semis and Ana Ivanovic in the final to take her third Grand Slam title. Then Sharapova had shoulder surgery that took her some time to recover from. At Wimbledon 2011 Sharapova lost in the Wimbledon final to Petra Kvitova. She gained revenge over Kvitova in the semis of the 2012 Australian but lost in the final to Victoria Azarenka in a battle of the shriekers. At the 2012 French Open Sharapova was at her peak and beat Kvitova and Sara Errani in the final to complete the set of four Grand Slam titles. Towards the end of the final her shrieks became even louder than ever as she won one of her most important victories. At the French Open in 2014 Sharapova won a final lasting over three hours against Simona Halep to take her second French title.
