Monica Seles played double handed off both sides and her powerful groundstrokes brought her to the top of the women's game in the early 1990s. Seles reached the semis of the 1989 French Open when aged 15 and lost to Steffi Graf. She won her first Grand Slam title at the French Open in 1990 beating Graf in the final. She won the Australian in 1991 over Jana Novotna. At the French she beat Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to win the title. At the US Open Seles survived an epic semi final against Jennifer Capriati and went on to beat Martina Navratilova in the final. At the Australian in 1992 Seles took the title beating Sanchez Vicario and Mary Jo Fernandez. At the French she triumphed over Graf in an epic match 10-8 in the third set (the best match between Seles and Graf). At Wimbledon she beat Navratilova before losing easily to Graf in the final. At the US she beat Sanchez Vicario in the final. At the Australian in 1993 Seles triumphed in a three set final over Graf. Seles had won seven of the last nine Grand Slam events. Then on that infamous day, 30 April 1993, Seles was stabbed by a spectator whilst sitting at a changeover during a match in Hamburg. She escaped serious injury but the mental scars took longer to heal. Seles finally made a comeback two years later at the U. S. Open. Despite virtually no matches under her belt, Seles reached the final and lost a tough three setter to Graf. At the 1996 Australian Open Seles won the title over Anke Huber. It was to be the last of her nine Grand Slam titles. Although Seles was still a very good player, she was now unable to beat the very best in the big events. Seles reached the US final in 1996 but lost to Graf. Seles lost a tight semi final to Martina Hingis in the 1997 French Open. At the 1998 French Open Seles beat Novotna and Hingis before losing a tight final to Sanchez Vicario. At the Australian in 1999 Seles beat old rival Graf before losing in the semis to Hingis. Graf gained her revenge at the French, beating Seles in the semis. At the Australian in 2002 Seles beat Venus Williams before losing in the semis to Hingis. Then injury problems forced Seles out of the game.
