Dorothy Round from Worcestershire, Great Britain, was the first non-Australian to win the Australian women's singles. Round had good groundstrokes and was a fine volleyer. She was very religious and refused to play tennis on a Sunday! At Wimbledon in 1933 Round beat Helen Jacobs in the semis before losing a tight final against Helen Wills-Moody. At the US, Round lost a tight semi to Jacobs. At Wimbledon 1934 Round beat Jacobs in three sets in the final to win her first Grand Slam title. At the 1935 Australian Round beat Nancy Lyle to win the title. At Wimbledon 1937 Round beat Jacobs in the quarters and Simone Mathieu in the semis. In the final she trailed 4-2 in the final set against Jadwiga Jedrzejowska before fighting back to win her third and last Grand Slam title.
