Margaret Osborne du Pont had an all court game and was one of the top post war players. Her great rival was Louise Brough, who was also one of her best friends. Osborne was 27 by the time the war ended. She won the French in 1946 beating Brough in the semis and Pauline Betz in a tough final. She took the title again in 1949 over Nelly Adamson and reached the semis in 1947 and 1951. At Wimbledon in 1947 Osborne took the title beating Doris Hart in the final. In the 1949 final Osborne du Pont lost a classic 10-8 in the final set to Brough. The following year Osborne du Pont beat Shirley Fry and Hart before losing to Brough in the final. Osborne also reached the Wimbledon semis in 1946 and 1948. Osborne reached the U. S. semis in 1941 and 1942 and the final in 1944 (losing all three to Betz). She was runner up again in 1947 (to Brough). She then won the U. S. three times in a row, beating Brough in 1948 and Hart in 1949 and 1950. The 1948 final in which Osborne beat Brough 15-13 in the final set was the longest final in the tournament's history.
