Justine Henin had a powerful backhand and a strong nerve. She first came to notice at Wimbledon in 2001, where she took a set off Venus Williams in the final before losing. Venus beat her in the semis of Wimbledon '02 and the Australian in '03. At the 2003 French Open Henin-Hardenne overcame Serena Williams in a tough semi final before an easier win over compatriot Kim Clijsters in the final. At the U. S. Open Justine showed all her battling qualities in finally subduing Jennifer Capriati in a final set tie break in the semis before beating Clijsters in the final. Henin began 2004 by beating Clijsters again in the final of the Australian. In 2007 Henin took a hat trick of French Open titles (her fourth in total). Then Henin won the U. S. Open beating Venus Williams in the semis and Svetlana Kuznetsova in the final. Six months later Henin suddenly announced her retirement from the game, despite being ranked number one in the world. Henin returned briefly in 2010 and reached the final of the Australian Open, where she lost to Serena Williams.
