Joan Hartigan was a top Australian player in the mid 1930s. Hartigan's best stroke by far was her forehand drive. At the 1933 Australian Hartigan survived an epic quarter final against Mall Molesworth before an easy win over Coral Buttsworth in the final. In 1934 Hartigan beat Molesworth in the final to take her second title. At Wimbledon she lost in the semis to Helen Jacobs. At Wimbledon 1935 Hartigan beat Dorothy Round before losing to Helen Wills-Moody in the semis. In 1936 Hartigan took her third Australian title, proving the steadier against the erratic Nancye Wynne in the final. Hartigan reached the semis in 1939, where she lost to Emily Hood-Westacott. In 1940 she lost in three sets in the semis to Wynne.
