Darlene Hard was a serve-volley player from California. At the US in 1954 Hard lost in the semis to Louise Brough. At Wimbledon 1955 Hard lost in the semis to Brough. At Wimbledon 1957 Hard beat Brough in the quarters and Dorothy Head-Knode in the semis before losing the final to Althea Gibson. At the US she lost in the semis to Brough. At the 1958 US Hard lost in the final to Gibson. At Wimbledon 1959 Hard lost in the final to Maria Bueno. At the US Hard lost in the semis to Bueno. At the French in 1960 Hard beat Bueno and Yola Ramirez to win her first Grand Slam title. At the US Hard won her second Grand Slam title of the year, beating Bueno in a tough final. At the US in 1961 Hard beat Margaret Smith in the semis and Ann Haydon in the final to win her third and last Grand Slam title. Going for a hat trick of titles in 1962, Hard lost in the final to Smith. At Wimbledon 1963 Hard lost in the semis to Smith.
