Kim Clijsters seemed to be destined to be the nearly woman of tennis in the early 2000s. In the early years of her career her boyfriend was Lleyton Hewitt, but they parted company and both went on to marry and have children with other people. At the French Open in 2001 Clijsters beat her compatriot Justine Henin in a tight semi final and had so many chances in the final against Jennifer Capriati but ended up losing an epic third set 12-10. She was runner up at the French and US in 2003, losing both finals to Henin. She lost in the 2004 Australian final to Henin. Clijsters finally won a Grand Slam title at the US in 2005, beating Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova and Mary Pierce. Then she set out plans to retire. She did retire. She had a child. Then she made a comeback at the 2009 US Open, where as a wild card, she beat Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki to win the title. The following year she defended her title beating Venus Williams and Vera Zvonareva to take her third US title. Clijsters then won the 2011 Australian Open, beating Li Na in the final. Clijsters retired in 2012.
