Sven Davidson was a clay court expert of the 1950s. He made his Grand Slam debut at the 1949 French Open and went out in the opening round. At Wimbledon 1953 Davidson lost to Jaroslav Drobny in the quarter finals in straight sets. At the US Open Davidson beat Arthur Larsen from two sets to love down in the fourth round before losing to Ken Rosewall in five sets in the quarter finals. At the 1954 French Open Davidson beat Rosewall in four sets in the fourth round before losing to Budge Patty in straight sets in the quarters. At the French Open in 1955 Davidson beat Patty in straight sets in the quarters and Beppe Merlo in the semis in straight sets before losing in the final to Tony Trabert in four sets. At Wimbledon he lost to Ken Rosewall in straight sets in the quarters. At the 1956 French Open Davidson beat Ashley Cooper in four sets in the semis before losing to Lew Hoad in the final in straight sets. At the 1957 French Open Davidson beat Ashley Cooper from two sets to one down in the semis before beating Herbie Flam in straight sets in a rather drab final to take his first Grand Slam title. At Wimbledon Davidson beat Vic Seixas in four sets in the quarters before losing to Hoad in straight sets in the semis. At the US Open Davidson lost in the semis to Mal Anderson in five sets. He played his last Grand Slam event at Wimbledon in 1959, where he lost in the third round to Jean-Claude Molinari in five sets.
