RODNEY HEATH (AUSTRALIA)

Australian Open 1905,1910

Rod Heath won the innaugural Australian Open in 1905. He came through a draw of 17 Australasian players, beating Dr. Curtis in the final. Defending his title the following year Heath lost to Frank Fisher in the quarter finals. In 1910 Heath took his second Australian title beating Horrie Rice in the final in straight sets. In 1911 he lost in the quarters to eventual champion Norman Brookes. At Wimbledon that year he made the quarter finals, losing to Max Decugis. He made the semis of the Australian in 1914 but was outplayed by Gerald Patterson. The Heaths were one of the most well known Australian tennis families of their era. Rod's father F.W.Heath was Vice President of the A.L.T.A., his older brother C.V.Heath won the South Australian singles in 1902 and his younger brother Noel also played the game. During the First World War Heath served in the R.F.C. and was promoted to the rank of Major. He died in 1936 at the premature age of 52.
