Petr Korda was a left handed wizard who was a top player during the 1990s. His passing shots were sheer delight and at his best he was almost unbeatable. In the 1992 French Open Korda beat Andrei Cherkasov in four sets in the quarters and Henri Leconte in straight sets in the semis before losing in straight sets to Jim Courier in the final. In the 1993 Australian Open Korda lost in the quarters to Courier in straight sets. At the Grand Slam Cup in Munich Korda saved six match points in an epic struggle with Pete Sampras in the semis before winning 13-11 in the fifth set by which time both players could hardly stand. In the final Korda beat Michael Stich 11-9 in the fifth set to take the title. In the 1995 US Open Korda lost in the quarters to Andre Agassi in four sets. At Wimbledon 1997 Korda lost in five sets to Sampras in the fourth round. The two met again in the fourth round of the US Open and this time Korda won on a fifth set tie break before retiring in his next match against Jonas Bjorkman due to the flu virus. At the 1998 Australian Open Korda overcame Jonas Bjorkman from two sets to love down in the quarters, Karel Kucera in four sets in the semis and Marcelo Rios for the loss of just six games in the final to take his first Grand Slam title at the age of 30. At Wimbledon he lost in the quarters to Tim Henman in straight sets. At the end of 1998 Korda tested positive for a banned substance. The news broke shortly before he was due to defend his Australian Open title. He lost in the third round to Todd Martin in five sets and after losing in round two of the French Open the ITF ban came into place and Korda announced his retirement at the age of 31.
