Mervyn Rose was a serve and volley player who was one in a long line of Aussie champions during the 1950s,60s and 70s. He reached the quarters of the Australian in 1950 where he lost to Eric Sturgess. At the same tournament the following year Rose led 2 sets to 1 before losing to Arthur Larsen in the quarters. He also made the quarters of the French. At the 1952 Australian Rose beat Ken Rosewall in a gripping five set quarter final before losing to Frank Sedgman in the semis. He made the semis at Wimbledon, where he lost to Sedgman and lost to Sedgman again in the semis of the US. Rose reached the final of the 1953 Australian but was outplayed by Rosewall. Seixas beat him in the semis at Wimbledon. At the 1954 Australian Open, Rose beat Seixas in the quarters and faced Rosewall in the semis. Rose won the first two sets but then Rosewall hit a rich vein of form to level at two sets all and led 3-1 in the fifth. Rose came back though and won 4 games in a row to lead 5-3. Rosewall levelled at 5-5 but Rose’s nerve held and he took the set and the match 7-5. Despite losing his way in the second set, which he dropped to love, Rose was too good for Rex Hartwig in the final. He won in four sets to claim his first Grand Slam crown. After reaching the quarters of the French and Wimbledon, Rose defended his Australian title in 1955 and lost in the quarters to Tony Trabert. The following year he made the quarters again but lost an epic match to Lew Hoad 9-7 in the fifth set. Then he made the semis of the French in 1957 and the quarters of Wimbledon. After losing to Mal Anderson in the semis of the 1958 Australian, Rose took his second Grand Slam title at the French. He then made the semis of Wimbledon and turned professional. Rose died in July 2017 aged 87.
