JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO(ARGENTINA)
US Open 2009
Juan Martin Del Potro made his Grand Slam debut at the French Open in 2006, where he lost to former champion Juan-Carlos Ferrero in the opening round. He began to rise rapidly up the rankings in 2008, when he hit a rich vein of form on the U. S. hard court circuit. At the U. S. Open he lost in the quarters to Andy Murray. Del Potro continued to improve in 2009. He lost easily to Federer in the quarters of the Australian, pushed Federer to five sets in the French semis but lost disappointingly early at Wimbledon to Lleyton Hewitt. At the U. S. Open Del Potro's powerful game was in top form as he hit many good serves and powerful groundstroke winners past Rafael Nadal, who was a step slower than usual in their semi final. In the final against Roger Federer, Del Potro seemed to be heading for a straight sets defeat when Federer served for a two set lead. However, Del Potro fought back to level at a set all. He was very determined to win the Grand Slam event he always dreamed of winning as a youngster. Despite beginning to tire, Del Potro's will to win drove him on to take the fourth set tie break to level at two sets all. Then, in the fifth, Federer was starting to look like a beaten man as Del Potro took the set 6-2 to win his first Grand Slam title. Federer may have hit the headlines during the tournament for hitting a shot between the legs to give him match point against Djokovic in the semis, but some of Del Potro's shotmaking during the final was extraordinary. His flat-hit powerful groundstrokes were reminiscent of Richard Krajicek's triumph at Wimbledon. At the 2010 Australian Open, Del Potro lost in the fourth round in five sets to Marin Cilic. Then Del Potro took almost a year out while he recovered from surgery. At the 2011 Australian Open he lost in the second round. By the 2011 French Open he was seeded again and took a set off Novak Djokovic in the third round. At Wimbledon he took a set off Nadal in the fourth round. At the 2012 French Open Del Potro led Federer two sets to love in the quarters but lost in five. At Wimbledon 2013 Del Potro was back to his best. He beat David Ferrer in the quarters before losing an epic match to Novak Djokovic in the semis. At the 2017 US Open, Del Potro was ill and two sets down against Dominic Thiem in the fourth round. He considered pulling out, but came back to beat Thiem in five sets. He then beat Roger Federer in the quarters in four sets before losing in four sets to Rafael Nadal in the semis.
