Fred Hovey made his Grand Slam debut in the 1890 US Open, where he lost early. In 1891 he lost in the All Comers final to Clarence Hobart in five sets. The following year he beat Robert Wrenn in the semis and Bill Larned in the All Comers final in straight sets before losing to Oliver Campbell in the Challenge Round in four sets. In 1893 Hovey beat Quincy Shaw and Clarence Hobart before losing to Wrenn in the All Comers Final in four sets. The following year he fell at the third round stage to Manliffe Goodbody. In 1895 Hovey easily beat Bill Larned in the All Comers final. In the Challenge Round, Hovey stayed back and constantly drew his opponent Robert Wrenn into the net and then passed him. Wrenn got his revenge the following year by beating Hovey in the Challenge Round in a classic five set encounter. It was the last time Hovey competed in a major tournament. He died in 1945 at the age of 77.
