E. VIC SEIXAS(U. S. A.)
US Open 1954
Vic Seixas' persistent determination paid off in his early thirties. Seixas lacked the classic strokes of many of his contemporaries but he more than made up for it with an iron will. He made his Grand Slam debut at the US Open in 1940, where he lost in the third round. He made his first trip overseas in 1950 and reached the quarters of the French and the semis at Wimbledon, where he beat John Bromwich and Eric Sturgess before losing to Budge Patty. At the 1951 US Open Seixas beat Dick Savitt in the semis before losing to Frank Sedgman in the final. He made the quarters at Wimbledon in 1952, losing to Herbie Flam. Making his first trip down under in 1953, Seixas reached the semis of the Australian Open, losing to Ken Rosewall. At the French Open he beat Jaroslav Drobny in the semis before losing in four sets to Ken Rosewall in the final. Top seeded at Wimbledon, Seixas beat Lew Hoad in five sets in the quarters before coming from two sets to one down to beat Merv Rose in the semis. In the final he easily beat the unseeded Kurt Neilsen to take his first Grand Slam title. At the US Open he beat Hoad before losing to Trabert in the final. Defending his title at Wimbledon in 1954, Seixas lost in the quarters to Budge Patty. At the US Open Seixas beat Rex Hartwig in four sets in the final to take his second Grand Slam title at the age of 31. Defending his title the following year, Seixas lost in the semis to Rosewall. At Wimbledon in 1956, Seixas led Rosewall two sets to one in the semi finals but eventually lost in five. At the US Open Rosewall beat him in the semis in straight sets. At Wimbledon 1957, Seixas lost in the quarters to Sven Davidson. He made his final Grand Slam appearance at the US Open in 1969, when he lost in the first round, 29 years after his debut.
