Australian Open 1957,1958
US Open 1958
Ashley Cooper worked hard to become a champion. He trained assiduously by running, lifting weights and exercises and practised endlessly. Cooper made his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open in 1954 and made it to the quarters before losing to Rex Hartwig. He made the Australian Open quarters again in 1955 and 1956. At the 1956 French Open he lost in the semis to Sven Davidson in four sets. At the US Open he lost in five long sets to Vic Seixas in the quarters. At the 1957 Australian Open Cooper beat Mal Anderson in straight sets in the semis and Neale Fraser in four sets in the final to take his first Grand Slam title. At the French Open he beat Fraser in the quarters before losing a two set to one lead against Davidson in the semis. At Wimbledon Cooper beat Jaroslav Drobny in the second round, Flam in the quarters and Fraser in the semis before losing in the final to Lew Hoad in straight sets. At the US Open Cooper beat Budge Patty in straight sets in the quarters and Flam in straight sets in the semis before losing to unseeded Anderson in the final in straight sets. At the 1958 Australian Open Cooper beat Fraser in the semis and Anderson in straight sets in the final to retain his title. At the French Open he blew a two sets to love lead against Luis Ayala in the semis. At Wimbledon Cooper beat Merv Rose in four sets in the semis and Fraser in four sets in the final. At the US Open he beat Seixas in four sets in the quarters, Fraser in straight sets in the semis and Anderson from two sets to one down in the final to take his third Grand Slam title of the year. Then Cooper turned professional. He finished third out of four in the 1959 World Championship Series and soon became disenchanted with the game. Pro tennis was good if you were at the top, but if there were a couple of people ahead of you then it could be tough to earn big money. In 2000 Cooper appeared at the Champions Parade at Wimbledon.
