French Open 1972
Andres Gimeno was a solid all round player who turned pro in 1960 without a major title to his name. When open tennis arrived in 1968 Gimeno had to wait four more years to claim his first Grand Slam title. He made his Grand Slam debut at the French Open in 1956, where he lost in the opening round to the South African Trevor Fancutt. In 1958 he reached the fourth round of the French, where he lost to Ashley Cooper in straight sets. At the Australian Open in 1959, Gimeno lost in the quarters to Bob Mark in four sets. He reached the French Open quarters in 1960 and turned pro at the end of the year. Gimeno returned to the Grand Slam arena at the French Open in 1968, when he was seeded three. He beat Ray Ruffels and Boro Jovanovic in the quarters before losing to second seed Ken Rosewall in the semis in five sets. At the Australian Open in 1969, Gimeno thrashed Rosewall in the third round, lost just five games to Butch Bucholtz in the quarters and beat Ray Ruffels in straight sets in the semis before losing to Rod Laver in the final in straight sets. At the French Open, Gimeno came from two sets to love down to level at two sets all in the fourth round against Manuel Santana before Santana retired. He lost in the quarters to Laver in four sets. At Wimbledon in 1970, Gimeno beat third seed Arthur Ashe in straight sets in the fourth round and Bob Carmichael in the quarters before losing in straight sets to second seed John Newcombe in the semis. At the French Open in 1972 Gimeno took advantage of the ban on WCT players by overcoming Clark Graebner in the fourth round in five sets, Stan Smith in the quarters in four sets and Alex Metreveli in the semis in five sets. In the final he overcame home favourite Patrick Proisy in four sets to take his first Grand Slam title. He remains, at 34 years of age, the oldest winner of the French Championships. Defending his title the following year, Gimeno lost in the second round to Guillermo Vilas. It was the last Grand Slam event he entered.
